Smalley in 1888

SMALLEY is a village, township and ecclesiastical parish, separated in 1877 from that of Morley, and is 6 miles N.E. from Derby, 4 N.W. by W. from Ilkeston, 12(sic) from Nottingham and 137 from London. It is in the Ilkeston division, S.E. Derbyshire, hundred of Morleston and Litchurch, Belper union and County Court district, archdeaconry of Derby and diocese of Southwell. St. John the Baptist's Church is a plain Early English building of stone, comprising chancel, nave, aisles and bell turret. It was restored and enlarged, and the chancel built in 1863 at the expense of Mrs. Radford, who also presented a fine painted window. Half an acre of land was added to the churchyard in 1878 by Mr. R. S. W. Sitwell. The registers date - baptisms from 1854, burials from 1854, marriages from 1838, the earlier records being at Morley. The living is a rectory of the nominal annual value of £350, in the gift of Mr. Sitwell, of Morley. There is a Baptist chapel, with burial ground, established 1786. The School was endowed in 1721 with about £200 a year by Samuel and John Richardson, for the education of 36 boys - 16 from Smalley, 12 from Heanor, and 8 from Horsley Woodhouse. There are now about 250 boys in the school. in two departments, an upper department having recently been added for the purpose of giving a higher than elementary education. There is also a National school for girls and infants. There are several charities The chief landowners are Mr. Arthur Radford,  Mr. R. S. W. Sitwell,   Mr. A. M. Mundy and Mr. W. D. Lowe. Area, 1656a. 3r. 29p.; rateable value, £3380 15s. 6d.; population in 1881, 836. The feast is the Sunday after June 24th. ST.
