| Smalley Parish Registers |

I first looked at Smalley Parish Registers in order to record all CARRINGTON entries. Since then my interest in Smalley has developed and I am in the process of transcribing all the parish records. St John the Baptist is now the parish church for Smalley but until 1877 it was a chapelry, in the parish of Morley. Over the years baptisms and marriages of Smalley parishioners took place in Morley, as well as Smalley. So where relevant, I have included Morley records. A point worth noting. I have always transcribed everything 'as seen', so what is in the notes column is in fact in the register. I have always resisted the temptation to add my own comments on what I know, on the basis that if anyone contacts me about an entry, I can then tell them what else I have gleaned. The whole thing is rather complicated by who has added to the entries. Sometimes the extra note is in the same hand, so that is straightforward. On other occasions it has been included by whoever did the Bishop's Transcript, so this is obviously after the event. Also, the Rev Charles Kerry had the habit of 'correcting' entries and adding his own notes but all of these are in the register, so they have been transcribed as such. If anyone is really interested in the originator of the note, I would refer them to the relevant film, as my data bank does not include that kind of guesswork, informed though it may be! The CARRINGTON data from the parish records has been transferred to the Family history pages, as I am now completing more of the parish register transcriptions. |
