Smalley in 1881

SMALLEY is a pleasant village, township and ecclesiastical parish, formed in 1877 from the ecclesiastical parish of Morley, 3 miles east from Coxbench station, 137 from London, 6 north-east from Derby, and 4 east from Duffield station, in the Southern division of the county hundred of Morleston and Litchurch, Belper Union and county court district, rural deanery of Duffield, archdeaconery of Derby and diocese of Litchfield.

The church of St. John the Baptist, formerly a chapelry to Morley, is a plain stone building, consisting of chancel, nave and aisles, and was enlarged and restored in 1863 by contributions, assisted by the late John Radford esq.: the chancel was erected at the cost of Mrs. Radford, who also presented a fine stained window: there are sittings for 270 persons: half an acre of land was added to the churchyard in 1878, presented by R. S. Wilmot Sitwell esq. of Stainsby House.
The register of baptisms dates from 1854, of marriages from 1838, and of burials from 1814: the early registers and records being kept at Morley.
The living is a rectory, yearly value about £400, in the gift of R. S. Sitwell esq. of Morley Hall and held by the Rev. William Bradshaw.
The Baptists have a chapel and burial ground here.

There is a charity, arising from land left by Samuel Richardson, in 1711, and paid to 15 poor colliers, who each receive £1 5s. per quarter; and £6 10s. from the Gishorne charity, left in 1817.

The principal landowners are Arthur Radford esq.  R. S. W. Sitwell esq. of Stainsby house, Derby, A. E. Mundy esq. and
W. D. Lowe esq.

The soil is clayey. The chief crops are wheat and grass. The acreage is 1,667; rateable value, £3,492;
