There is not a great deal to be found on this line
but Charles Kerry does give some background to the family.
He records:
"A very repectable family of Buxton once occupied a good fashioned brick house with
stone facings & which stood in the year 1848. From what I remember of the style
it was a house built apparently about 1680 and after a little expense might have been
made the best house in the village. The squalid surroundings, nailor's shops etc,
precluded the idea of its restoration.
It is not entirely clear whether Kerry is referring here to Smalley or Horsley
Woodhouse.
The last of the Buxtons of Woodhouse was a
small farmer* and I recollect some farm buildings now - on the west side of
the house. He appears to have married one of the ordinary women of H Woodhouse.
My brother Samuel Turton (now aged 75) informs me that he remembers 'old
Nance Buxton' very well and that she could work in the stocking frame &
smoke with her pipe in her mouth at the same time.
Canon Prior informs me there was a
family of Buxton of Kilbourn in the 18th. century but he cannot find any connection
of the name with Woodhouse.
*1867 June 22 Francis Buxton late farmer of Horsley Woodhouse was found drowned at
Kilbourn.
(Jos. Moss' Diary)"
I have been able to identify Francis Buxton in census data and have made a hypothetical
link to the main Buxton family; as always, I welcome any comments on this.
However, I have not been able to establish the identity of 'old
Nance Buxton'.
