This family line for Thomas 'Banker' Martin is
something of a mystery, as Charles Kerry, most unusually, is himself doubtful of the accuracy.
He notes :
"Early part doubtful. Very doubtful but given by Frank Martin
Jnr. from memory but compare this with the pedigree on p.224, (Martin of Smalley)
the names of four brothers coincide"
This could be an explanation of the connection between 'Banker' Martin and
the Martin family of Smalley. However it is complicated by Kerry's own record of a
Thomas Martin of Cotgrave, son of Thomas Martin and Hannah Handley, also baptised in
1768, who died in 1840 aged 73. As yet I have not found any marriage between Thomas Martin
and Hannah Handley, so the inaccuracy may be there.
There is now good evidence that
Thomas, Christopher, Samuel, and Ann, who married William Grundy, were in fact the
children of Samuel Martin and Rebecca Lynam of Mapperley, not Thomas Martin of Cotgrave.
This, with other findings, brings in to question the supposed connection with
'Banker' Martin. For the time being I have left the pedigrees as they are but
I am still working on the puzzle!
